Business is an umbrella business covering 5 towns. We print 4000 of each town's issue approximately every 14 days. The brochures are full colour and display a minimum of 8 A5 pages per issue with an ideal aim of 16 pages, no more. The more one puts into it, the more pages of adds published creating the business's revenue.
We operate on a close relationship between the area representative and the locals. Every business in town is contacted every 2 weeks as the rep gathers up the commercial ads. Commercial advertising is still very keenly priced and makes advertising a viable service even for the smallest of businesses. As well as the commercial ads, we publish community and non-profit ads. These are free with the smallest ad and at a sizeable discount on larger booked ads.
The brochures are then delivered door to door to homes and also to the businesses in each town, free of charge.
The business comes with a large customer database of all customers who have booked ads with us since 2004 so the database alone is a valuable if intangible asset to the business. Many of the customers book and renew in series of 6 issues, paying for 5, with 1 free and they are the anchor advertisers. The rep just touches base with these advertisers every fortnight to update their ads.
Reps are contracted and charge for expenses plus a percentage of total sales which are paid for. Commission is not paid until the customer pays.
We operate a 14 days credit from the date of the invoice however many businesses choose to pay monthly and by agreement, we allow this with anchor customers who are good to pay.
Once the ads are gathered they are sent to our graphic designer who prepares the files for the printers. We have printers on board who are very agreeable with a very keen price. All print work etc is sourced in Ireland. The graphic designer is also self contracted and paid per page of each issue, so there is no payroll to be managed making things a lot easier to run.
The delivery team are all also self contracted to the business.
There is definitely room for expansion and we were thinking of taking the issue online since the covid and even the elderly have become ofait with the internet. At present, the brochure is not being delivered due to covid 19 restrictions so an online addition would increase revenue exponentially.
Unfortunately, due to my wife and a key player of the business being struck down with serious long term illness we have decided the only wise option is to sell the business as I also have had to become her full-time carer.
Taking the business online will be a total game-changer and we would love to be a part of that but unfortunately, that's not an option for us now.
It's a rewarding service because of community interaction. It's great to see small businesses manage to stay afloat because they advertise with us.
We work closely with some stores and have anchor advertisers such as Supermacs and Eurospar and Credit Unions and the Gardaí in most towns for example.
Given the right push in the right direction, one should at least double the turnover as the younger market would be opened up. Possibly in the future one could go digital completely, reducing carbon footprint and also delivery costs would be cut to almost zero, raising profit every week by almost 100%
Wishing all the best to you, our future owner.

Run from a home office base, there are very few overheads. In some towns, stores are our advocates and the public can submit ads to the stores, who then pass them on to us. We also have small independent newsagents in each town to tick the box of a modern business whilst still promoting small local businesses.
The business need a website and an app. We were in the process of this when my wife's condition became critical. This progress would change the trajectory of the business completely. Competition would however become, Buy and Sell, Adverts.ie and also E-Bay however our niche it the local theme. Our tagline is "Keep your local business by keeping your business local".
Because we are a community publication we believe customers who want to buy or sell something, want it as near as possible so they will go with local advertising. We also have a lot of prayers sent in to publish.
Over the last 17 years we have run this as a simple sole trader business. On 2 occasions, there was competition in Nenagh from someone who purely tried to copy the noticeboard but didn't know how to run the behind the scenes part of the business. They were also not well received by our customers who they approached. They didn't last long. Our business is a small business but a strong one at that, even holding strong through the 2008 recession where other businesses failed, the ones who advertised with us through those tough times did hold fast and are still going. Similar happened in cashel and carrick-On-Suir but again they did not last. The main competition would be the local newspapers, it might also be an option to buy us out and run both publications or combine both. The possibilities with this business are extensive.
Due to my wife developing cancer and being in a poor condition now, I am now to be her full-time carer and haven't the time needed to run the business and also she struggles to still play her part while she is ill. We would have loved to see the business move online but we can't control health, unfortunately.
We are prepared to stay on for a short time after the business sale to show the ropes and make sure everything is set up right for you.
We are open to contracted payment in installments if necessary.
